Title I Compact

Overview

Bessemer Academy and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the State’s high academic standards.

Bessemer Academy will:

Provide a high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

  • Weekly planning meetings to assure all lessons are rigorous and aligned to the standards
  • A safe and engaging learning environment that incorporates PBIS, No Bully, and 2nd Step Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum
  • Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes to strengthen student connectedness by enhancing healthy bonds
  • Computer-based instruction offers individualized, differentiated, and engaging instructional opportunities
  • Project-Based Learning
  • Provide opportunities for students to experience STEM courses in Engineering and Manufacturing


Hold parent-teacher conferences during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.  Specifically, those conferences will be held:

  • During October 
  • Back to School/Title I night in which the compact and Title I Parent Involvement will be discussed
  • Spring Student-Led Conferences


Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.  Specifically, the school will provide reports as follows:

  • DIBELS Home Connect reports
  • Home/School communication on a regular basis
  • Inform parents of all school events/meetings as well as encourage parents to attend
  • Make positive phone calls on academic and behavioral successes
  • RtI Meetings for identified students
  • Use student planners daily to communicate with parents and guardians


Provide parents with reasonable access to staff.  Specifically, staff will be available for consultation with parents as follows:

  • Daily classroom planner
  • Facebook
  • Hold an annual “Back to School Night” to meet staff and learn about Title I programs.
  • Meet with parents upon request and/or return phone calls/ emails in a timely manner
  • School Website
  • Remind app to communicate daily


Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

  • All parents have the right to know if their child’s teacher is “Highly Qualified” and the teacher’s qualifications; or if services are given by a paraprofessional, they have the right to know that services are given by a paraprofessional and to know the paraprofessional’s qualifications
  • Attend school functions/sporting events during the day or evening
  • Educational showcases, concerts, and other opportunities
  • Make arrangements with the classroom teacher for a time and specific volunteer activities
  • Serve on the school parent accountability board
  • Sign-in and wear a volunteer badge at all times

 

Parent Responsibilities

We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

  • Participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to my child’s education
  • Staying informed about my child’s education and communicating with the school by promptly reading all notices from the school and/or school district either received by my child or by mail and responding, as appropriate
  • Attend School Events and Activities (Title I Family Nights, Open House, STEM events, Art events)
  • Ensure that my child or children are at school and on time
  • See that the school has accurate emergency numbers, phone numbers, and addresses for the parent/guardian at all times
  • Sign and adhere to ALL the expectations listed on the Enrollment Commitment Form for the Innovation Zone schools, to be distributed in August

 

Student Responsibilities

We, as students, will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement and achieve the state’s high standards.  Specifically, we will:

  • Give to my parents or guardian all notices and information received by me from the school every day
  • Believe that we can achieve high standards and work towards individual growth and success.
  • Be respectful to all adults and their peers
  • Come prepared to LEARN
  • Engage in the No Bully Protocol to make our school a safe place
  • Set personal goals for achievement every day
  • Attend school regularly
  • Be a positive role model to other students

Title One Programs and Plan

  • Inform parents about goals and purposes of Title I, curriculum used in Title I programs, academic assessments used to measure student progress, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
  • Involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs at school.
  • If the Title I Plan is not satisfactory to the parents, submit parent comments on the plan to the district.
  • If requested by parents, provide opportunities for regular meetings where parents may offer suggestions or ask questions.
  • Provide timely responses to parent’s suggestions/questions.
  • Provide assistance to parents, as appropriate, in understanding assessments, Title I requirements, monitoring academic progress, and how to work together to improve student achievement.
